We’ll welcome you with a hot cup of tea or coffee, giving you a chance to meet your fellow trekkers. Over dinner, we’ll do a full briefing for your K2 Base Camp Trek, go over the plan, and answer every question you have. After that, get some rest—you’ve had a long flight.

Scenic Mountain Flight to Skardu (2,230m) – Gateway to the Karakoram

Get ready for one of the most incredible flights of your life. This 45-minute journey to Skardu is a highlight reel of mountain scenery. Try to grab a window seat for jaw-dropping views of Nanga Parbat (8,126 m) and the endless peaks of the Karakoram.

Once we land in Skardu, we’ll pick you up and take you to the hotel where you’ll meet some of your amazing porter team. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore the town. Skardu is the capital of Baltistan (often called “Little Tibet”), a region with a rich culture and history all its own.

A Note on Flights: This flight is a visual treat but is highly dependent on clear weather. In the rare event of a cancellation, we have a fantastic Plan B: we’ll travel overland on the legendary Karakoram Highway. This involves an overnight stay in Naran (a 9-hour drive) and then continuing to Skardu the next day (an 8-10 hour drive). Honestly, the road trip is just as spectacular, with views of the Indus River and the junction of the Himalaya, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush ranges.

Skardu Exploration & Trek Preparation Day

This is a crucial day. While you explore, our team is busy in the background, finalizing your documents, permits, and all the logistics for the trek. For you, it’s a vital day to acclimatize and discover this fascinating gateway town.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Kharpocho Fort: Hike up to this 16th-century fort for breathtaking views over the entire Skardu Valley and the Indus River.
  • Sadpara Lake: A short drive takes you to this crystal-clear blue lake.
  • Buddha Rock: Visit this 8th-century carving, a relic from the time before Islam arrived in the region.
  • Kachura Village: Explore the beautiful Upper and Lower Kachura Lakes (Shangrila) and get a taste of village life.

Enjoy that comfy hotel bed—starting tomorrow, we’re in tents!

The Jeep-Ride to Johla (3,075 m)

Today, the real adventure begins! We’ll hop in our 4×4 jeeps for a thrilling 8-hour ride along the Shigar and Braldu Rivers. The drive itself is an event, carving through narrow valleys and incredible landscapes.

We’ll pass through Askole, the last village and the final outpost of civilization. This is where we leave the world behind and enter the true wilderness of the Karakoram. Thanks to road extensions, we can now drive all the way to Johla, which cuts out a day of trekking and gets us right into the action.

Welcome to your first night of camping! We’ll get the tents set up by the river. Your backdrop for the night? The stunning Bakhor Das peak.

  • Drive: ~8 hours (141 km)
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-5

Trek to Paiju (3,420 m)

Boots on the ground! This is our first official trekking day. It’s a 6-hour walk, mostly following the Braldu Gorge. It’s a great warm-up, with undulating trails and a few small stream crossings (sport sandals are great for this).

Our incredible kitchen crew will head out before us to prepare lunch and have the camp set up before you even arrive. We’ll reach Paiju camp, a classic, green oasis for all expeditions. The vibe here is amazing, with incredible views of the Trango Towers starting to appear. If we’re lucky, the porters might treat us to some traditional Balti singing and dancing tonight!

  • Trek Time: ~6 hours
  • Distance: 21 km
  • Ascent: 580 m
  • Descent: 335 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Elevation Gain: Ascent 330m, Descent 160m

Trek to Khoburtse (3,795 m)

Today, you meet the legend: the Baltoro Glacier. This is one of the world’s longest non-polar glaciers, and it will be our highway for the next few days.

After an hour’s walk from Paiju, we’ll step onto the glacier itself. It’s not a slippery, white slope; it’s a massive, moving river of ice covered in rock and rubble (moraine). You don’t need technical gear, but trekking poles are handy for balance.

After a lunch break at Liligo (keep an eye out for Ibex!), we’ll continue on the moraine to our camp at Khoburtse. This campsite is off the glacier and offers sensational views of Uli Biaho and the Trango Towers.

  • Trek Time: ~7 hours
  • Distance: 15 km
  • Ascent: 640 m
  • Descent: 220 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-7

Trek to Urdukas (3,900 m)

A shorter but tough day today as we climb onto the glacier’s undulating moraine. The payoff is Urdukas, a historic and beautiful campsite built on a grassy slope about 100 meters above the glacier. This is the last campsite with actual constructed facilities (toilets, basins!), so enjoy them!

This camp was first established in 1909 by the Duke of Abruzzi’s expedition. The view from here is unreal. You get a stunning panorama of the Baltoro, with Cathedral Peak and the Trango Towers dominating the skyline.

  • Trek Time: ~4 hours
  • Distance: 6 km
  • Ascent: 250 m
  • Descent: 40 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-8

Acclimatization & Rest Day at Urdukas

This is one of the most important days of the trek. We call it a “rest day,” but it’s really an acclimatization day. We let our bodies catch up to the thin air before we push higher.

We’ve learned over decades that resting here at Urdukas (3,900 m) is far safer and more effective than resting lower down at Paiju. It’s our key to a successful and healthy trek. Feel free to take a short walk for even better views, or simply relax, read, and soak in the incredible scenery.

  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-9

Trek to Goro (4,295 m)

eeling strong after our rest day, we push on to Goro. The landscape becomes more and more intense—more ice, more rock, more high-altitude desert.

We’ll pass a memorial to porters who lost their lives on the glacier, a humbling reminder of the power of these mountains. The visual highlight today is Masherbrum Peak (7,821m), known as the ‘Queen of the Karakoram’, which reveals itself in its full glory.

Goro II is our first campsite directly on the Baltoro Glacier. Yes, you’ll be sleeping on a river of ice (in your tent, of course!). Make sure you have your warm layers ready.

  • Trek Time: ~7 hours
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Ascent: 330 m
  • Descent: 90 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-10

Trek to Concordia (4,500 m)

This is it. The day you’ll remember forever. We’re trekking to Concordia. Nicknamed “The Throne Room of the Mountain Gods,” and for good reason.

Concordia is the stunning junction where the Baltoro Glacier and the Godwin-Austen Glacier meet. It is, without a doubt, one of the most spectacular places on Earth. You are surrounded by a 360-degree amphitheater of the world’s highest peaks.

You’ll see Gasherbrum II, III, & IV, Mitre Peak, Chogolisa, and the massive Broad Peak (8,047m). And then, you see it: K2 (8,611m), the ‘Savage Mountain’, finally reveals itself at the head of the valley. It’s a moment that’s hard to put into words.

  • Trek Time: ~5 hours
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Ascent: 290 m
  • Descent: 5 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-11

Trek to Broad Peak Base Camp (4,800 m)

A lot of treks stop at Concordia, but not us. We’re on a K2 Base Camp Trek, so we’re going all the way.

Today, we’ll trek up the Godwin-Austen glacier to Broad Peak Base Camp for the night. This gets us even closer to the giants and perfectly sets us up for the final push tomorrow. The views of K2 from here are simply staggering.

  • Trek Time: ~4 hours
  • Distance: 6 km
  • Ascent: 300 m
  • Descent: 5 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-12

The Main Event: K2 Base Camp (5,150 m)

The big day. We get up early and make the final push to K2 Base Camp (5,150m).

First, we’ll stop at the Gilkey Memorial, a moving pyramid of rocks and plaques honoring the climbers who never returned from K2. It’s a powerful and humbling place.

Then, we walk into the base camp itself. You’ve done it. You’re standing at the foot of the second-highest mountain on Earth. The feeling is indescribable. This is the camp where climbers from around the world spend months preparing for their ascent. We’ll celebrate, take all the photos, and soak in the achievement before trekking back to Concordia for the night.

  • Trek Time: ~7 hours (round trip)
  • Distance: 11 km
  • Ascent: 350 m
  • Descent: 650 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-13

Trek back to Goro (4,295 m)

Today, we start the journey home, but it’s not over. As you retrace your steps, you’ll see everything from a completely new perspective. With K2 and Broad Peak at your back, the views down the glacier toward the Trango Towers are magnificent. You’ll also notice the descent is much easier. Tonight, we camp at Goro again.

  • Trek Time: ~7 hours
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Ascent: 30 m
  • Descent: 400 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-14

Trek back to Khoburtse (3,795 m)

We continue our descent, leaving the icy world of the upper glacier behind. It’s amazing how different everything looks on the way down. We’ll pass Urdukas and marvel at the tenacity of those early explorers. We’re heading down, and you’ll feel the air getting warmer and richer with every step.

  • Trek Time: ~7 hours
  • Distance: 14 km
  • Ascent: 100 m
  • Descent: 470 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-15

Trek back to Paiju (3,420 m)

We’re officially off the glacier! Today we cross the snout of the Baltoro, where the Braldu River is born from the ice. We’ll trek back to Paiju. The green of the camp and the trees will be a welcome sight after so much rock and ice.

  • Trek Time: ~5 hours
  • Distance: 15 km
  • Ascent: 220 m
  • Descent: 640 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-16

Final Trek to Johla (3,150 m)

Our final day of trekking. We’ll retrace our steps along the Braldu River back to Johla. The path will feel much easier, and you’ll be in high spirits.

Tonight is our last night in the tents, and it’s a special one. We’ll have a celebration with our entire team of porters and kitchen staff. This is the time to show our appreciation for their incredible hard work (we’ll help coordinate tips), share stories, and enjoy a final night of Balti music under the stars.

  • Trek Time: ~7 hours
  • Distance: 21 km
  • Ascent: 450 m
  • Descent: 600 m
  • Accommodation: Full-service Camping
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-17

Drive back to Skardu (2,230 m)

This morning, we’ll say our heartfelt goodbyes to our porter team as most of them are from Askole. Then, it’s back in the jeeps for the 8-hour drive to Skardu.

You’ll arrive back at the hotel in the afternoon. A hot shower and a real bed have never felt so good! We’ll have a final celebration dinner together to mark the successful completion of our epic journey.

  • Drive: ~8 hours (141 km)
  • Accommodation: Blue Sky Hotel (or similar)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-18

Fly back to Islamabad

We’ll catch the scenic flight back to Islamabad, enjoying those mountain views one last time. Our team will be waiting at the airport to transfer you back to the hotel.

That feeling of returning to the “real world” after two weeks in the wild is always a bit strange! The rest of the day is yours. Relax, or let us know if you want to do some souvenir shopping (handmade Pakistani and Afghan rugs are a popular choice).

  • Accommodation: Hill View Hotel (or similar)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
D-19

Contingency Day in Islamabad

This is a crucial contingency day. Mountain weather is unpredictable. If our flight from Skardu was delayed yesterday, we use this day to drive back to Islamabad via the Karakoram Highway.

If we flew on schedule, today is a free day for you in Islamabad. We highly recommend visiting:

  • Faisal Mosque: An architectural marvel.
  • Islamabad Monument: For great views of the city.
  • Rawalpindi: Explore the bustling, historic “Old City” right next to Islamabad for a taste of a traditional bazaar.

Tonight, we can have one last group dinner at a great local restaurant.

  • Accommodation: Hill View Hotel (or similar)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The K2 Base Camp trek is extremely strenuous and challenging. It is considered one of the most demanding high-altitude treks in the world, significantly harder than the Everest Base Camp trek.

The difficulty comes from four main factors:

  1. Duration: The trek is long, typically 14-16 days of continuous walking (out of a 21-23 day total itinerary).
  2. Altitude: You will spend many consecutive nights sleeping above 4,000 meters (13,100 ft) and trek as high as 5,150m (Concordia) and 5,650m (Gondogoro La, if included).
  3. Terrain: This is not a developed trail. For most of the trek, you will be walking on the uneven, rocky, and unstable glacial moraine of the Baltoro Glacier. It requires constant focus and strong ankles.
  4. Daily Distance: You will be walking for 6-8 hours on most days, covering significant distances in a remote environment.

Fitness Requirements: You do not need to be a technical mountaineer, but you must be in excellent cardiovascular shape and have high stamina.

  • Recommendation: You should be comfortable hiking for 6-8 hours with a 5-7kg daypack for several days in a row.
  • Training Plan: We recommend a dedicated training program for at least 3-4 months before your trek. This should include:
    • Cardio: 3-4 times a week (running, cycling, swimming, or incline walking).
    • Strength: 2 times a week (focus on legs and core with squats, lunges, and step-ups).
    • Stamina: At least one long-distance hike (6+ hours) per week with a weighted pack.
