Strategic Overview: The Bridge to 7,000m

For many climbers, Laila Peak serves as a critical bridge. Its technical snow and ice slopes demand the rigor of a 7,000m peak but with a more manageable oxygen ceiling. This makes it the ideal training ground for those eyeing Spantik or Muztagh Ata.

Our expedition spans 23 to 35 days, depending on your team’s acclimatization needs. We provide full-board logistics to ensure you are physically and mentally primed for the summit push.

Here’s how your journey unfolds, from arrival to ascent:

The journey begins in Islamabad, Pakistan’s serene capital. After a detailed expedition briefing at our staging hotel, we take the early flight to Skardu.

For optimal views of the Karakoram, choose a seat on the right side of the aircraft to take in the dramatic skyline, including K2.
Skardu (2,230m): We spend two days here to acclimate, explore the Manthal Buddha Rock, and finalize logistics in the historic bazaar.

Phase 2: The Hushe Valley & Trek to Base Camp

We drive along the Shyok River, a primary tributary of the Indus, entering the lush Khaplu Valley. Our destination is Hushe, a traditional Balti village where the road ends and the high-altitude wilderness begins.

The Approach: A steady trek to Saicho and then onto Laila Peak Base Camp (4,535m).
Our chefs provide high-performance, calorie-dense meals, supporting recovery and strength throughout the expedition.

Phase 3: The Ascent (11-Day Climbing Window)

From Base Camp, the climb is a non-guided technical pursuit. Our staff stays at BC to provide weather updates and radio support. The route typically involves a steep ascent of the western face, requiring confident crampon technique and proficiency with ice tools.

The Laila Peak Expedition (6,096m): A Masterclass in Karakoram Technical Ascent

Commonly cited as the most beautiful mountain in the world, Laila Peak is a granite and ice spear that defines the Hushe Valley. For climbers eyeing 7,000m summits like Spantik or 8,000m giants like K2, Laila Peak (6,096m) serves as the ultimate technical proving ground.

With more than three decades in the Karakoram, Blue Sky Treks & Tours provides the specialized logistics needed to tackle Laila’s 55-degree icy slopes with precision and safety.

Phase 1: The Tactical Approach to Baltistan

Day 1 | Arrival in Islamabad: The Staging Ground. Your journey begins in Pakistan’s capital. Upon arrival at Islamabad International Airport, our team transfers you to the hotel. In the evening, we conduct an expedition briefing.

Day 2 | Aerial Reconnaissance: The Flight to Skardu (2,230m) We take the 45-minute flight to Skardu, often called the “flight of a lifetime.” You will see the scale of Nanga Parbat (8,126m) and the distant crown of K2.

Note: If flight conditions are unfavorable, we switch to the Karakoram Highway (KKH), a rugged, scenic 2-day drive that offers views of the Indus Gorge.

Day 3 | Heritage & Acclimatization in Skardu: A day of preparation and culture. While we finalize permits with the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department, you will explore the 17th-century Kharpocho Fort and the 8th-century Manthal Buddha Rock. This day is crucial for early adjustment to the 2,000m+ baseline.

Phase 2: Into the Hushe Valley

Day 4 | Skardu to Hushe Village (3,170m): The Road Ends. An early start lets us cross glacial meltwater streams before the afternoon sun increases their flow. We travel along the Indus and Shyok Rivers through the lush Khaplu Valley. We establish our first camp in Hushe, where the bulk of Masherbrum (7,821m) dominates the northern horizon.

Day 5 | Trek to Saicho (3,330m): The Gateway. Our first day on foot. A gentle 5-hour trek through the Hushe Valley leads us to Saicho. This campsite serves as a junction for several world-class climbing routes. It is an easy walk designed to conserve energy for the challenge ahead.

Day 6 | Arrival at Laila Peak Base Camp (4,535m). We ascend toward the Gondogoro Glacier. The 4-5 hour trek brings us to Laila Peak Base Camp. The campsite offers a panoramic amphitheater of granite, with Laila’s “needle” silhouette standing center stage.

Phase 3: The Vertical Objective

Days 7–17 | The Climbing Window: 55 Degrees of Precision. The non-guided climbing phase begins. Laila Peak is a technical “mid-grade” climb with a consistent 55-degree inclination.

The Route: The lower sections are mixed rock and snow, transitioning into pure, crystalline ice toward the summit.

Advanced Staging: Most teams establish an Advanced Base Camp (ABC) at approximately 5,765m on the eastern flank of the Gondogoro Glacier.

Support: Our chef and base camp staff remain on-site, providing high-calorie, nutrient-dense meals essential for high-altitude recovery.

Phase 4: The Journey Home

Day 18–19 | Descent to Civilization After the summit push, we strike camp and descend to Saicho and Hushe. This is a time for celebration with our porters, the legendary climbers of the Hushe Valley whose local knowledge is unrivaled.

Day 20 | Return to Skardu via Khaplu We drive back to Skardu, stopping in Khaplu to visit the 14th-century Chaqchan Mosque, one of the oldest in the region. In Skardu, the luxury of a hot shower and a real bed marks the successful conclusion of the mountain phase.

Day 21–23 | Islamabad & International Departure We fly back to Islamabad, with a contingency day for the unpredictable “Karakoram Factor.” Enjoy a final celebratory dinner featuring traditional Pakistani cuisine before your transfer to the airport for your flight home.
